2018 is a timely year for the return of one of the best and most socially conscious duos in hip hop.

Black Star are Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli. According to HipHopDX, Bey announced that new Black Star music is on the way this year, and that it will be produced by Madlib (producer of albums by Madvillain, Freddie Gibbs and many more). The announcement came at Madlib’s DJ set in Denver, where Yasiin Bey told the crowd, “New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon! … 2018, Madlib, Black Star. Madlib Black Star.” At the same event, Madlib asked the crowd, “Y’all ready for that album with us?”

If this new Black Star project is indeed a full-length album, it’ll be the group’s first LP since 1998. Black Star’s one and only album, 1998’s Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, is a certified classic. Fans have eagerly awaited a follow-up for two decades, and it looks like 2018 might finally see the group’s sophomore effort.

In 2011, the group released the single ‘Fix Up,’ listen here:
