Kanye West onstage at the Celebration of Phife

Kanye West hopped up on the stage at tonight’s Celebration of Phife at the Apollo Theater (an event that also included speeches and performances by Busta Rhymes, The Roots, D’Angelo and more). As he leapt onstage and took the microphone, Kanye said, “I wasn’t asked to speak but that ain’t never stopped me before.”

Kanye spoke about his love for A Tribe Called Quest, then responded to Peter Rosenberg, who had previously mentioned Led Zeppelin while discussing Tribe’s influence and legacy. “I don’t wanna hear Zeppelin mentioned at Phife’s funeral,” Kanye said twice. He went on to speak about the appropriation of hip hop culture.

“Anything I ever did wrong,” Kanye said shortly before closing, “blame Tip and Phife cuz y’all raised me.”
