Punk and feminist icon Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame) wasn’t pleased with all-male ads for the new HBO documentary series ‘The Defiant Ones.’ The ad which Hanna saw featured images of Bruce Springsteen, Marilyn Manson, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Tom Petty. Hanna suggested a revision (see below) that replaces the men with Laura Jane Grace, Nina Simone, M.I.A., and Joan Jett.

While the ads for ‘The Defiant Ones’ make the show look like it will focus on the stories of these individual trailblazers, it is actually a four-part series about the collboration of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, whose partnership resulted in successful entities including Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics. Eminem, Tom Petty and others (including Stevie Nicks and Patti Smith) have been enlisted to tell the story of Dre and Iovine’s career and cultural impact.
