RIP Lil Peep. The Long Island rapper born Gustav Åhr is dead at 21. Lil Peep was a rising star known for his fusion of hip hop and alt rock.
Lil Peep’s representatives confirmed his death to The Guardian, who are calling the incident a “suspected overdose.” Peep was scheduled to perform last night in Tucson, Arizona. Reports from the venue claim that Peep overdosed on his tour bus nearby. The rapper’s music chronicled his depression and drug use.
Lil Peep’s ascent has been swift during the past few years. His 2016 release Hellboy gained traction for its blend of emo and trap music; Pitchfork dubbed him “the future of emo.” This year, Peep released his debut LP, Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One). The Long Beach native was also a fashion star in the making; his daring style and homespun tattoos gained him a catwalk appearance for Vlone and a video feature at GQ. The New York Times covered Lil Peep – and the drug-fueled lifestyle of his subgenre – in its feature on the phenomena known as Soundcloud Rap.
Just yesterday, Peep posted the message “When I die You’ll love me” on Instagram:
Condolences have been pouring in from the hip hop world through the night:
