Alternative/grunge band Local H has been chosen the winner of Metallica’s ‘Hit the Stage’ contest, which sought a ‘local’ band to open for the metal juggernauts during 5 dates of its 2017 WorldWired tour. It’s a bit of a stretch to call Local H a ‘local’ band; they had a three-album run on a major label and a bonafide hit with their 1996 single ‘Bound to the Floor.’ While they are a great rock band, they’re not exactly scrappy upstarts looking for their big break. However, on the flip side, Metallica needs a band that’s capable of playing a stadium. Your cousin Jimmy’s garage band doesn’t have the experience necessary to perform in a venue of that magnitude.

According to Loudwire, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told Chicago radio station 97.9 The Loop the following: “I know that Local H are obviously local hometown heroes in Chicago and Local H has obviously been on my radar on and off for 20 years, so to have them come and join this summer at our stadium run and play five shows is gonna be awesome.”

Metallica’s WorldWired tour will also include opening sets by Beastie Boys DJ Mix Master Mike, who recently told Culture Creature how excited he is to bring a metal-centric DJ set to Metallica’s audience.

See Local H open for Metallica at the following dates:
May 19 – Foxborough, MA – Gillette Stadium (also with VOLBEAT)
June 04 – St. Louis, MO – Busch Stadium (also with VOLBEAT)
June 14 – San Antonio, TX – Alamodome (also with AVENGED SEVENFOLD)
June 16 – Dallas, TX – AT&T Stadium (also with AVENGED SEVENFOLD)
June 18 – Chicago, IL – Soldier Field (also with AVENGED SEVENFOLD)
