As we approach the new year, ‘Fuck 2016’ has become the rallying cry of those who are sick and tired of 2016’s relentless buzzkill. It was a year during which we lost Carrie Fisher, Prince, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Leonard Cohen and George Michael. President-elect Donald Trump is a thing that happened. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin seemed to sum up the #Fuck2016 sentiment when he took to his blog to plead, “Please, let this wretched year come to an end.”
As usual, comedian Louis CK has provided a unique and sobering take on the topic. On Christmas Eve, CK sent fans an email providing updates about his app and comedy specials. At the end of his email, CK got personal with fans with a bit of thought poetry that goes against the grain of ‘Fuck 2016’ sentiments. Louis CK wrote:
Also please remember that the turning over of one year to another is a mental construct that bears no more weight than the things that keep us apart and in competitive categories as human beings. Time is not moving. You’re not losing or gaining ground. You’re not separate from “them” anymore than you’re separate from your own umbrella. It’s now, we’re us and this is here. If you’re in pain, this too shall pass. If you’re in luxury, this too shall pass. Ask an old lady how she’s doing. The internet is not real. Draw a picture on a napkin. … Love to all of you. Louis CK
