Metallica will release its tenth studio album, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct on November 18th. The album is a double disc produced by Greg Fidelman along with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Fidelman has previously worked on Metallica’s Death Magnetic (2008) and Lulu, the band’s polarizing 2011 collaborative album with Lou Reed. Metallica have released the video for the album’s debut single, ‘Hardwired.’ Watch below.

‘Hardwired’ is a middle-of-the-road, thrashy Metallica song that would fit in on Death Magnetic. However, the lyrics are insufferably dopey. The trite ‘I’m doomed’ angst of the title Hardwired… to Self-Destruct is a conceptual re-hash of Metallica songs like ‘Sad But True’ (whose narrator discovers that he’s his own worst enemy), and it’s too similar to Nine Inch Nails’ cringey ‘Mr. Self Destruct’ from The Downward Spiral. Metallica’s legacy is colossal, which seems to make it difficult for the band to naturally be Metallica without sounding like a hackneyed facsimile of Metallica (the band grappled extensively with this dichotomy in the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster). Too often, they fall into the latter category – as is the case on ‘Hardwired.’
