A Brief History of Pop Stars Sneaking Around Inside Luggage Cases

There are countless show biz ‘tricks of the trade’ that are shared among industry professionals. One of these tricks recently made headlines when Zayn Malik told Vogue that Taylor Swift “was traveling around in a suitcase” in order to avoid paparazzi. Well, it turns out that this is a time-honored technique that some stars use to bypass inconvenient throngs of onlookers and attention-seekers. Here are a few more examples of pop stars traveling in road cases.

Prince was quite fond of sneaking around in equipment cases. Concert production staff member Arden Radosevic recalled loading the diminutive star into an equipment case to wheel him through a crowd to the stage. The Purple One climbed inside the case and winked at Radosevic before he was sealed in.

Prince also liked to hide in road cases to exit venues. Getty Images has this photo of a “flight case where Prince hid to leave the venue”:

Rivers Cuomo

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo used this technique during the early 2000s. According to a source who was present on Weezer’s tour, “At the end of the night they would put pillows in a case for an amplifier and carry [Rivers] out so he wouldn’t have to talk to anybody.”

This transportation technique probably looks like major rock star behavior – but it’s actually quite sensible if you think about it. Some of these stars are unable to simply go from point A to B without a major hassle. Why not just load out with the gear? Also, if it was good enough for Prince, it’s good enough for me.
