UPDATE: Radiohead has responded (via Pitchfork), stating, “We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past”

Radiohead is holding its ‘worldwide streaming event’ for A Moon Shaped Pool today; fans on the band’s subreddit broke news of a violent attack at one such event. Fans were beaten by attackers at a record store called Velvet Indieground in Istanbul. The attack was partially recorded on a Periscope account from within the store (watch here). One Redditor, who claimed to be the owner of said Periscope account, said:

i was one of the hosts. i am the person that’s speaking in that video. i am the owner of that periscope account. they were determined to kill us. we were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads, i don’t even know how we made it out. i will share the details later guys. just hoping that noone will die”

According to some translations of Turkish news stories, the attackers were motivated by the fans’ celebration and consumption of alcohol during the holy month of Ramadan.
