Chicago’s Slow Mass tread in a heavy, angular style of post-hardcore that’s sure to please fans of Fugazi or contemporary Dischord Records offspring like Brooklyn’s Big Ups. The band’s debut EP, Treasure Pains, is streaming below prior to its release this Friday.
Treasure Pains rips open with the driving, dissonant stomper ‘Dark Dark Energy.’ The jittery rhythm section and disjointed shards of guitar draw the listener into ‘Bruce Lee’ before the band takes an introspective turn on ‘Nice But Not Kind.’ Guitarist Dave Collis and bassist Mercedes Webb weave their vocals around one another throughout, providing balance and texture.
