2017 looks promising for a reunion of 'Siamese Dream'-era Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan was interviewed on Mancow Muller’s radio show on Tuesday. During the interview, Corgan was asked about the potential for a 2017 reunion of the band’s classic lineup of Corgan, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. Here are Billy’s remarks:

Things look good for us getting together to play. We’re talking about it. We’ll see. … Here’s the thing – again, being honest. There’s a willingness for us to play. But the world’s changed a lot since we didn’t play. The reunion thing is always a bit weird because then people come in with their expectations. So my whole thing is, if we do it, we’re gonna do it to make people happy and not sorta go against the tide of what people wanna hear and that type of stuff. My interest in it is sort of limited. I’m not gonna do it for like fourteen years of my life.”

Billy sounds like he understands what people want from a reunion tour of a beloved rock band: they want to hear the hits, not a performance that “goes against the tide of what people wanna hear.” If his goal is to “make people happy,” this sounds like a very promising reunion.

Smashing Pumpkins has existed in various incarnations over the years. However, the lineup that existed during the Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness era is the best known.
