A 1988 high school love letter written by Tupac Shakur is up for bidding at an auction site called Moments in Time. The starting bid is $35,000.

Pac writes with the 1988 equivalent of emoticons; he starts the letter, “[eye] felt compelled 2 write u.” The letter harkens back to an innocent time before the world famous ‘thug life’ rap icon. It’s artistic and sensitive.

The letter is addressed to a girl nicknamed ‘Beethoven’ – a classmate in Pac’s drama class. A note from ‘Beethoven’ is included in the auction. “I didn’t know the man who tattooed ‘Thug Life’ on his chest,” she writes in the auction note, “and who was gunned down on a Las Vegas street… I knew the kid who made me understand Shakespeare… I knew the kid who loved Prince, and candles and had a broken heart. And the kid who drew birds flying upside down on the notes that he passed in school.”
